Stricter password requirements at UiS from 22.06.2023

To make your user and data resistant to attacks and threats, it is important that you use a strong password.

Published Updated on

Based on recommendations from national authorities (NOR), password requirements for students and employees will from 22.06.2023 be made more strict. This means that your password must:

  • Contain at least 16 characters
  • Contain three out of four following requirements:
    • Lowercase letters
    • Capital letters
    • Numbers
    • Special characters (i.e. #!"&%@)
  • Not be the same as one of your previous six passwords
  • Not include part of your name or user name

In return, we don't have to change our passwords as often. Instead of requiring a password change every six months, we now have to change our passwords about every three years.

The new requirements will take effect from the next time you have a scheduled password change. If you wish to change it before this, you can do this at https://konto.uis.no/en/

Good passwords are passwords that a malicious actor or computer program can't easily guess. For this, length and complexity is essential.

This is possible to achieve at the same time as the password is easy to remember. Make a short sentence with for example slang-words that are easy for you to remember.
