Door 20: Electrolysis of water

Four days before Christmas Eve, Inge and Magne do electrolysis of water and form hydrogen.

Electrolysis is a chemical reaction that takes place using electric current.

You need:

• A construction set. We used the Solar hydrogen science education kit, which is available from most companies that supply science equipment.

What happens:

We use a kit that contains everything we need to demonstrate electrolysis of water. Collection of hydrogen and oxygen gas is formed by electrolysis of water.

When hydrogen and oxygen are formed, the set can be easily switched so that it becomes a fuel cell that runs on hydrogen gas, and which creates enough power to drive an electric motor with a propeller.

Total reaction 2H2O  2H2 + O2

The reactions at the two electrodes are as follows:

Reduction at the cathode 2H + (aq) + 2e-  H2 (g)

Oxidation at the anode 2H2O (1)  O2 (g) + 4H + (aq) + 4e-

aq = in water; g = gas; l = liquid
