Content

The course intends to develop knowledge and skills in working with spatial analysis and cityscape design. It contains the study of urban spaces and its identity, functionality, connections to urban structures, including of nature and programming.

The mandatory exercises regard different aspects of urban design, urban landscape, urban space and urban connectivity. A series of exercises aims at a continuous increase of skills and knowledge. The exercises and the project intend to trigger creativity and increase an understanding for urban planning and design.

Learning outcome

After completing the course the student should have

  • Knowledge about and sills withing shaping urban spaces, parks and green spaces
  • Understanding about external conditions that affect the design of urban space
  • Understanding of improving urban space with landscape elements
  • Insight into basic user needs

After completing the course the student should be able to

  • Carry out spatial analyses of urban space, streets and places
  • Express different atmospheres through spatial compositions and form studies
  • Produce ideas and drafts - drawings and model studies of urban spaces
  • Specify drafts in terms of dimensions and materials

After completing the course the student should have general knowledge about

  • Presentation of ideas, drafts, analyses, concept proposals and model studies
  • Presentations of projects - orally and graphically with drawings, models and photo montages

The assessment of the subject consists on one project assignments in groups, three individual exercises and a series of individual hand drawings in a sketchbook. The course has folder and sketchbook evaluation, and course teacher will sett the grade. No grade will be given until all elements are handed inn. The individual exercises account for 40%, project assignment in groups 50% and sketchbook 10%.There are no resit opportunities in this course. Students who fail , must retake the entire course the next time the course has ordinary teaching.

Coursework requirements

Participation in at least 80% of the lectures, supervision and presentations is a condition for handing in individual exercises and the group assignment.

Method of work

6 mandatory hours of project-based teaching, supervisions, site visits, exercises and individual and group project work every second week. Participation is mandatory. This includes tutorials, supervisions, site visits, presentations and reviews.

The course consists of a series of exercises and projects that relate and build upon each other. Supervision will be given in the studio time, and it is therefore a premise for approval of the course that all groups are present during this session, and that contribution to the individual exercises and group work can be documented. The result form the supervision should be documented, and shown during next supervision. The course contain both individual and group work.

The exercises include developing av concepts and presentation techniques, drawing, photo editing, relevant software and model building.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years.
