This course builds and expands on the contents of DAT230 Communication Technology 1. Key topics include LAN/WAN switching and routing protocols, WLANs, quality of service, and recent advancements in computer networking - e.g., IoT, cloud-based and software-defined networking. The completion of this course together with DAT230 and additional independent studies provides the student with the necessary skills to obtain the Cisco CCNA certification.

The course builds and expands on DAT230 Communication Technology 1. It provides a detailed overview of how Local Area Networks (LANs) are configured and scaled by utilizing modern switching and routing technologies. In doing so, it discusses multiple dynamic routing protocols (e.g., OSPF). Further, it provides an overview of Wide Area Networks (WAN) technologies and protocols with a focus on encapsulation, tunnelling and routing protocols for branch and P2P connections over WANs (e.g., VPN, BGP, GRE, IPSec and MPLS) and will also briefly overview general aspects of network security and monitoring in such environments. Further, Quality of Service (QoS) in the network will be discussed. This will include discussion of QoS strategies at different network stack layers e.g., AQM and queueing strategies, Diffserv and Intserv. In addition, ACLs and will be discussed.
In the latter part of the course, the state-of-the-art networking trends and evolution of communication networks (and Internet technologies) at multiple layers of the networking stack will be discussed. Among other things, this will include the latest trends on network softwarization and virtualization concepts using SDN and NFV in the cloud and network edge environments.
It is worth noting that the course curriculum comprises of both lecture and lab sessions. The completion of this course together with DAT230 and additional independent studies provides the student with the necessary skills to obtain the Cisco CCNA certification.
After completing this course the student will be able to have a detailed understanding of the communication networks design, operation and protocols with emphasis on network scalability and programmability for state-of-the-art network technologies and topologies.

Implement IP routing and services in a communication network in a secure way.
Deploy various routing protocols and strategies on network components.
Construct (and troubleshoot) larger networks.

The written exam is a mix of digital multiple choice and textual questions. Allowed aids: Definite, basic calculator allowed.
100% of chapter assignments and 100% lab assignments that are held throughout the semester and attendance in the lectures must be approved before admission to the written exams is granted. Absence should not be more than 3 lecture weeks unless a doctor certificate is provided.
In total 8 hours per week including lectures, and lab sessions that include group work, exercises,and assignments.
