Friluftsliv: forest and mountains (IDR233)

Students will learn about the value base and role of outdoor life (Friluftsliv) in Norwegian society. The relation between historic practices and modern activities as well as how different outdoor activities can contribute to a more sustainable society. The course provides basic knowledge and practical experience with excursion planning, accident prevention and dealing with accidents and injures in water, forest and mountain terrain. Field simulation is an important tool here. Teacher led excursions and student-led trips in smaller groups provide hands on in-depth knowledge about of outdoor life in forest and mountain environments.

  • History of outdoor life and its significance for Norwegian identity
  • Rules and regulations
  • Modern outdoor life practices
  • Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE) in forest and mountains
  • First aid course
  • Self-sufficiency and rescue in water
  • Excursions: Mountain hike #1 (4 days), Mountain hike #2(4 days), Student led trip (4 days) in smaller groups
  • Indoor and outdoor climbing (weather dependent)

Additional information:

  • The course will be conducted mainly in Norwegian, but with English translation when necessary
  • The course will be physically demanding and students must be in good physical condition.
  • Students must be able to swim.
  • Students must have their own personal outdoor equipment.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge

  • The student shall:

  • Perform self-sufficiency and CPR in water and waterways.
  • Conduct and lead hikes in forest and mountain environments.

  • Reflect on different outdoor life practices and the sustainability perspective.
  • Organize and evaluate hikes in a forest and mountain environment.

• Students (in groups) prepare trip plan for student-led excursion.
• Students document trip with video, edit and present a film (group grade, 25%).
• Individual oral exam and demonstration related to student led excursion (individual grade, 25%).

Written School Exam: 3 hours (50%)

Coursework requirements

Compulsory attendance 80%

Compulsory attendance of 80% of all teaching, practical activities, and excursions.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students.
