Students who complete a master's in industrial economics are likely to move into leadership positions or start their own company during their professional careers. Understanding strategy is relevant regardless of the size of the organization or where you work in the organization.

Businesses experience continuous changes in technology, markets, and the environment as a result of complex interactions between many factors: global warming, technology, innovation, politics, sustainability, conflicts, and international trade. Operating in a complex environment makes it important to cultivate cooperation, innovation, and capabilities that create long-term adaptability and competitiveness.

The quality of the leadership has an impact on the company's value-creation processes both technologically and socially; not least in knowledge-intensive industries. Knowledge of what characterizes good management in general and in relation to working in teams is key.

Organizational conditions and external framework conditions are constantly changing. The businesses must develop appropriate strategies to position themselves in the changed competition. Development, growth, internal, and external adaptation must be managed. There must also be learning and innovation processes in the business. Leadership thus influences both access to and management of resources: technological, commercial, and human.

Strategic management integrates knowledge of conditions affecting the competitive situation and the strategic alternatives available with insight into how to ensure the successful implementation of the chosen strategy. Management is included as a central ingredient at all levels in these processes.

NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by August 20th for the autumn semester.

This course aims to increase the student's understanding of different factors that can affect the organizations' conditions to succeed. This demands a comprehensive approach to the organization, the competitive environment, and leadership. These factors will influence the management's strategy process.

This will represent a holistic approach to the different topics and disciplines integrated into strategic Leadership. The intention is to move toward integrating different theoretical approaches with contributions from management literature, economics, organizational theory, and psychology. The complexity of the subject shall stimulate critical and analytical thinking and the ability to be a competent partner in a concrete organizational setting.

The home exam has a duration of two (2) weeks.The home exam builds on the case the students work in groups with throughout the course. At the end of the home exam, a written report based on the group's case assignment must be submitted. The report must incorporate answers to additional questions given in the home exam. The report must also contain the presentation to be given at the oral exam.After the home exam period has ended and the report has been submitted, an oral exam will be set up.The oral exam has a duration of approx. 30 minutes and is carried out in groups. The oral exam deals with the presentation of the case in the report, in addition to answering questions in the home exam.Exceptionally, the task can be carried out individually by agreement with the subject teacher.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years.
