Introduction

Basics of calculus of several variables, elementary linear algebra, Taylor and Fourier series. Mathematical software (Python).

Content

Linear Algebra, power series, Taylor series, Fourier series, functions of multiple variables. Mathematical software (Python).

Learning outcome

After having completed the course, the student should:

  • know basic concepts of elementary linear algebra; be able to handle systems of linear equations and solve eigenvalue problems;
  • be able to analyse convergence/divergence of series; find the Taylor and Fourier series of a given simple function;
  • have basic knowledge of multi-variable calculus.
  • know how to use the computer software program Python to solve elementary problems in one- and multi-variable calculus.

Written exam is with pen and paper.

Note that the exam is given in the language the course is taught in. The exam can be answered in Norwegian or English.

Coursework requirements

75% compulsory attendance at math exercises, 3 Compulsory assignment exercises

There are three mandatory assignments during the course, one of which is in Python. Students may take the final exam only if all mandatory assignments are approved. Mandatory assignments must be approved by the lecturer at least three weeks ahead of the examination date. Participation in (a percentage of) the tutorial sessions is mandatory.

The mandatory coursework requirements are only valid in the same semester as the examination is taken. Students who fail or wish to improve their grade must complete all mandatory coursework again the next time the course is offered with regular teaching.
