Earth, Energy and Climate (GEO100)
The course gives an introduction to the Earth as a system. It covers therefore aspects for other than earth sciences as well like construction, environment and climatology. Laboratory practices aim for the understanding of basic concepts and processes in applied geosciences.

Essential topics that will be addressed in the course are:
- General geology
- Evolution of the Earth
- Earth history
- Classification of rocks and minerals
- Petroleum Geosciences
- Introduction to paleontology
- Plate tectonics
- Introduction to structural geology
- Geophysical methods
- Geotechnics
- Environmental geologi
- Climate and paleoclimate
- Global warming
The course includes short field excursions.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
- Knowledge about the structure and history of Earth.
- Knowledge about geological time and geological processes that form the Earth structure.
- Knowledge about elements and processes of subsurface methods to address a wide field of sciences like environment, geology, construction and economic geology.
- Knowledge on different methods that are used to identify rocks, understand rocks and sediments of the Earth structure and to explore for hydrocarbons.
- Basic knowledge of geoscientific processes related to global warming and climatology
Skills:
- Be able to identify different types of rocks and minerals.
- Be able to apply basic geologic concepts for the fields of environmental geology, economic geology, geohazards.
- Be able to apply basic knowledge of subsurface analytical methods to a wide field of sciences.
General competence:
- Background on general geology that can be used as a basis for other areas in geology, engineering, environment, construction and economics.
- Have an understanding of the complexity of geological elements and processes that form the Earth.
- Be able to communicate and explain basic geology.
- Be able to apply several geophysical methods to understand the structure of the subsurface for economic geology, construction science and archeometry.
