General inquiries

All international master's programmes are taught in English.

No, UiS does not offer any bachelor’s programme taught in English. You can find all bachelor’s programmes taught in English in Norway at Study in Norway's website.

No, UiS is a public university and does not charge tuition fees. All students are required to pay a semester fee of NOK 735 per semester, with the exception of exchange students.

However, as a mandatory part of the application to a master's programme at UiS, applicants from non-EU/EEA countries must document financial ability as this will later be an essential part of the study permit application. More information about how this amount can be documented can be found on Documentation Requirements. No, UiS does not charge any application fee.

Students applying for one of the following programmes may apply for scholarships:

  • Erasmus Mundus in Social Work with Families and Children (not offered in 2020/ no admission for the academic year starting in 2021)
  • Nordic Master in Social Work and Welfare (not offered in 2020/ no admission for the academic year starting in 2021)

UiS does not offer any other programmes with scholarships. All students are responsible for supporting themselves during their study at UiS.

No, UiS does not evaluate individual credentials prior to application. If you wish to be considered for admission, we encourage you to apply during the application period.

No, it is not necessary. However, if you have NOKUT's general recognition already, please add it to your application.

No, UiS has only one intake per year. The academic year at UiS starts in August every year. See more information about When to Apply.

No, there is no age limit for admission to master studies at UiS.

It is not possible to transfer directly into a study programme at UiS. If you would like to study at UiS, you first need to apply for a study programme. After being admitted, you can consult with your study coordinator about the possibility of transferring some of the credits taken during your previous study.  

UiS does not evaluate if any of such credits can be transferred into your study at UiS before you are actually admitted to a study programme offered at UiS. The International Office at UiS offers Norwegian language courses for beginners at a reduced cost to new international students enrolled at UiS. Further information will be provided to the admitted students.

UiS works together with SiS, the Student Welfare Organization, that offers rooms with private and shared facilities. Further information will be provided to the admitted students. You can also read more about student housing for international applicants in Accommodation.

For information regarding family immigration and residence permit issues, please visit UDI's webpage. Please note that we only offer single rooms for international students. If you plan to bring your family you must arrange for accommodation on your own.

In addition, the student deposit account held by UiS is only used for newly admitted students. UiS is not responsible for documenting financial guarantee for their family members. The amount which exceeds NOK 130 000 will be sent back to the sender.

Generally, UiS cannot help students finding jobs. However, some students find part-time jobs outside of the university. Possibilities are very limited and all students should be prepared to cover all expenses without a part-time job.

Yes, in that case you need to fill in the form and follow the instruction given on the Documentation Requirements.

However, please note that UiS prioritizes the candidates who have graduated and submitted all necessary documents within 1 March. You will be considered for admission if there are still available study places at the time when you deliver your final diploma and transcript.

It is not necessary to have NOKUT's general recognition before your application. However, if you have NOKUT's general recognition already, please add it to your application.

After you have checked that you are eligible for a study programme, you have to register your application in SøknadsWeb and upload the required documents under «My documents» in SøknadsWeb within the deadline. Read carefully which documents you should upload on Documentation Requirements.

Before you apply - Admission requirements

Unfortunately we do not have capacity to assess your grade average before you apply.

No, you should not convert your grades. Please just write your GPA according to the grading scale used at your university. Please make sure to upload information regarding your university's grading system, if you have any. All international applicants with foreign education will be individually evaluated during the admission process.

To be considered for admission, you should have a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C (according to ECTS Standards) in your bachelor's degree. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B, a Second Class Upper in the British system.

Specific grade requirements are defined for applicants who have completed a bachelor's degree in certain countries. Please check the Country List to see if there is a specific grade requirement for your country.

Before you apply - English language requirements

English tests must be no more than two years old at the time of applying to UiS. The only exeption is the Cambridge tests, which are valid for life.

No, we do not.

No, UiS only accepts IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, TOEFL paper-based test, PTE Academic and Cambridge English Qualification, as specified in English Language requirements.

Only for the intake of August 2021, we accept TOEFL Home Edition.

You can be exempted only if you have completed at least one-year studies at high school or university in specific countries. Please check the English Language Requirements for more information.

UiS verifies all English test results online. Therefore, you do not need to send hard copies of your score report to UiS.

Only if you have taken TOEFL tests and you have not selected UiS as one of the score report destinations, you may be asked to share your "username" and "password" temporarily so that UiS can verify your scores online.

Before you apply - Documentation requirements

Yes, the secondary education certificates/diploma is one of the required documents.

Yes, the deadline to upload all required documents is 10 January unless you have a citizenship from a Nordic country/EU/Switzerland or Liechtenstein. If you have a citizenship from a Nordic country/EU/Switzerland or Liechtenstein, your deadline is 1 March. The list of required documents can be found on the Documentation requirements.

Only a few documents can be delivered after the deadline. More information in the Documentation Requirements.

Applicants from certain countries are required to send their transcript of records directly from the issuing institution. Please check the Country List for more information.

Unless you are from one of the countries with such additional documentation requirement, you should upload all documents in your online application.

No, such documents are not required and will not be taken into consideration in the admission process. We ask you to only upload the required documentations as any additional documentation will delay the admission process.

Transcript of recrods is an official statement listing courses/subjects you have completed at your university, including your grades and workload (ECTS or similar).

You must always upload your bachelor's diploma and transcripts as admission to master's programmes is based on the bachelor's degree. If you have a master's degree in addition, you should upload both your bachelor's and master's transcripts and diplomas.

The documentation of financing can be documented with one of the followings:

1) a recent official bank statement in your own name

2) a letter confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan from your home country

3) a sponsor guarantee letter and sponsor's recent official bank statement

Yes, any currency is fine.

The statement should be no older than 3 months at the time of applying.

No, the documentation of financing is one of the required documents. Therefore it must be uploaded to your application before the application deadline.

You only need to document financing for one year when applying for a study programme at UiS. However, if you get admitted, the study permit is normally given for one year only. This must be renewed for the second year and in this process you will have to document the financing again.

Submitting your online application

No, once you upload documents in SøknadsWeb, it is automatically attached to your application and your application is complete. You can check the list of uploaded documents under "My documents" in SøknadsWeb.

Each time you upload a document, you will receive a confirmation email. You can always check the list of uploaded documents under "My documents" in SøknadsWeb.

You can upload required documents under "My Documents" in Søknadsweb at any time within the application deadline. Check which documents are required in the Documentation Requirements.

You can find infomation under the English Language Requirements.

International students can apply for one or two study programmes. If you chose to apply for two programmes, you have to put one of them as your 1st priority and the other one as your 2nd priority. If you are admitted to your 1st priority, your application to your 2nd priority will not be considered. Therefore, it is important to consider well which study programme you would like to study most.

If you would like to change your priorities, you can do so wtihin the application deadline. It is not possible to change your priorities after the application deadline.

Yes, if you are applying for international master's programmes, you can change your priorities as many times as you like within the application deadline. It is not possible to change your priorities after the application deadline.

It is an applicant's responsibility to upload all necessary documents within the deadline, as instructed in the Documentation Requirements. UiS does not ask applicants to international master's programmes for missing documents.

After submitting your online application

Normally all international students receive the outcome of their applications within May. An email with the result is sent to the email address you registered in the application.

You can log into SøknadsWeb and see the status of your application. However, whenever we publish the outcome of your application we also send an email notification to the email address you registered in your application.

Not all the offers/outcomes are sent at the same time. For example, some applicants with outstanding academic backgrounds receive early admission.

Yes. But please note that if you receive an offer of study to your 1st priority later, the study place to your 2nd priority will automatically be given to another applicant on the waiting list.

No, it does not influence your application to the 1st priority.

Normally, it is not possible to accept the study place after the deadline since your place is automatically given to another applicant if you do not accept it. However, sometimes there are vacancies later so if you are still interested in your place, send an email to admissions@uis.no with your application number and we will see if it is still possible to accept the offer.

Unfortunately we are unable to comment on your status on the waiting list. If you do not receive an offer by 15 August, you did unfortunately not succeed in getting a study place that year and should consider it as a rejection.

After receiving the outcome of your application

No, you cannot. If you for some reason do not accept your offer, you must apply again next year. Please inform us as soon as possible if you decide not to accept.

No. Admission letters will be published in SøknadsWeb. Once you receive a notification via email, you can download the official Letter of Admission under My Documents in SøknadsWeb.

It is not possible to register as a student and set up your IT user account before you receive an email from the IT Department with instructions on how to do this. This email is normally sent out to all admitted students around 1 August.

If you want to withdraw from your study place, you can send an email with your application number to admissions@uis.no.

If you have already registered for the semester, you can send an email to your study coordinator at the Faculty and send Notification of Withdrawal in Digital Student Reception.

We will provide information about this closer to the semester start here.

You may ask for an explanation concerning the result of your application. The deadline for asking for an explanation is three weeks after you received your application results, and it should be addressed to the unit that has made the decision (eg. the Admission Office).

If you still believe that your application was wrongfully evaluated after receiving the explanation, you can file a formal complaint.

However, please note that applicants can only file a complaint based on procedural mistakes. Any new information, which the applicant did not initially include in the application, will not be taken into account. It is not possible to file a complaint regarding academic level or grades evaluation.

All international applicants with foreign education will be individually evaluated during the admission process and the Education Committee reserves the right to decide grade requirements for deviating grade systems.
