Mohammad Mansouri , Associate professor

Content

Light bulb

In the course you will go through various energy sources including conventional fossil fuels and renewable energy sources, their impacts, and their future trends.

To cover the intermittency challenge of some of the renewable energy sources, a summary of different applicable energy storage options is also provided.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand societal needs for energy transition and sustainable development
  • Learn the energy resource classification and their trends in future
  • Understand challenges and advantages related to renewable energy sources as compared with fossil fuels
  • Have basic knowledge of thermal sciences (such as thermodynamics) applied to renewable energy systems
  • Know about different thermal and power applications of solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy, and biomass energy.
  • Apply an interdisciplinary approach to various energy-related projects.
  • Use different diagrams (such as thermodynamics ones) to extract necessary parameters for simple energy system analysis
  • Carry out simple energy analysis and estimate the potential for heat/power production from renewable energy sources

Method of work

  • Module-based structure in Canvas (including short videos, lectures and exercises), self-pace online preparation, self-study; the course will have three non-obligatory online seminars for the course start, assignment introduction, and the exam preparation.

Exam

  • Home exam, 3 hours, theory (multiple choices questions), and calculations
  • Exam date: 22.05.2024
  • Grading: A-F

Required prerequisite knowledge

  • None

Recommended prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge in mathematics and physics

Syllabus

  • Lecture materials and exercise
  • Textbook: Fundamentals and applications of renewable energy, Mehmet Kanoglu, Yunus A. Cengel, and John M. Cimbala, 1st Edition, Mc Graw Hill, ISBN: 978-1-26-045530-4
  • Higher Education Entrance Qualification (GSK = grunnleggende studiekompetanse) or prior learning (realkompetanse).
  • Read more about the admission requirements here: Universitet og høgskole - Samordna opptak. If you apply on the basis of formal competence , the necessary documentation must be uploaded at the same time as you apply.

Admission based on prior learning (realkompetanse)

  • If you wish to apply for admission to higher education, are aged 25 or over and do not have higher education entrance qualifications, you may apply on the basis of prior learning. The University of Stavanger itself has the authority to assess what qualifications that are required. Please upload a CV and work-certificate.
  • Applicants with a foreign education must document their higher education entrance qualification according to the GSU-list. You can find more information about the GSU-list here: https://www.nokut.no/en/foreign-education/GSU-list/ by choosing the country where your education is taken. The language requirement is mandotary for English and Norwegian.
  • Applicants with a foreign education must upload an offical translated diploma in either English or a Scandinavian language before submission.

Applicants with Norwegian or English as a second language must document sufficientknowledge of Norwegian or English.

  • To learn more about the language requirement go to Samordnaopptak https://www.samordnaopptak.no/info/utenlandsk_utdanning
  • You can also go to NOKUT to see which countries require an English test (GSU list) GSU-listen | Nokut.
  • If you do not meet the language requirements above you may apply on the basis of prior learning. If the default language at work is english, you can then upload a document from one of your manager/HR manager that confirms your language proficiency.

The course will be set up as long as there is a sufficient amount of applicants
