All students who go on exchange to an institution with which UiS has an Erasmus+ agreement can receive an Erasmus+ grant. The allocation is automatic, and the eligible students will receive information directly from the International Office.

Please note that we cannot provide grant for dates after 31 July for students on exchange spring 2024 because this is the end date of the current Erasmus+ project period.

  • € 530 per month for Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and Austria
  • € 470 per month for other program countries

Grant details

Please note that UiS students until spring 2024 will receive the previous grant rates from the Erasmus+ 2022-project, and that the exchange rate for that project is fixed at 1 EUR = 9.8 NOK. This means that there will be enough grant funds for all the students who are on exchange in the spring of 2024.

The Erasmus+ grant is tax-free and is provided in addition to any loans and grants from Lånekassen.

For grant rates for Erasmus+ mobility outside the European Union, please see Erasmus+ International Dimension.

Travel grant from autumn semester 2024

From autumn 2024 all students will also receive an Erasmus+ travel grant based on travel distance and mode of transportation. The grant is higher for green travel.

Example of how these travel grants are calculated:

  • Travel distance 100-499km: € 211 travel grant / € 285 green travel grant
  • Travel distance 500-1999km: € 309 travel grant / € 417 green travel grant
  • Travel distance 2000-2999km: € 395 travel grant / € 535 green travel grant

The travel grant is allocated automatically. The green travel grant has documentation requirements and will be allocated after the exchange. More information on how to apply for the green travel grant for the autumn 2024 semester will come.

Additional grant for students going on internships

Students going on internships will automatically receive an additional grant of € 150 per month.

  • Students who have been on exchange in the autumn semester: 30 January
  • Students who have been on exchange in the spring semester 2024: 30 June

Students who do not submit documentation within the given deadlines will not receive any remaining grant. If you fail to submit all required documents after your exchange is completed, you will be asked to repay the total Erasmus+ grant.

Main grant

The grant amount is calculated based on the dates specified in the grant agreement. You will receive approximately 85% of the total grant at the start of the semester. Students on shorter placements/traineeships with given dates will receive the full grant at once.

If you have submitted all the documents within the deadline, you will receive the main grant on these dates:

  • Students going on exchange during the autumn semester: by 30 October
  • Students going on exchange during the spring semester: by 28 February

Any remaining grant

The final total Erasmus+ grant is calculated based on the number of days you have actually been on your Erasmus+ exchange, and any remaining scholarship is determined by the dates confirmed by your host university. After completing your exchange, you must submit the Confirmation of Erasmus+ Exchange period document and submit a final report.

If you have submitted all the documents within the deadline, you will receive any remaining grant on these dates:

  • Students who have been on exchange in the autumn semester: by 28 February
  • Students who have been on exchange in the spring semester: by 30 October

Students who do not submit documentation within the given deadlines will not receive any remaining grant. If you fail to submit all required documents after your exchange is completed, you will be asked to repay the total Erasmus+ grant.

Minimum duration of stay:

The minimum duration per study exchange is two months (60 days). The same applies to internships.

Termination after reaching the minimum duration of a stay:

If a student terminates their exchange before the planned end date but after the study period has lasted for two months, they will retain the grant for the period they were on exchange. The student must submit the Confirmation of Erasmus+ Exchange Period document which confirms the duration of the stay.

Termination before reaching the minimum duration of a stay:

If a student terminates their exchange before reaching the minimum duration of the stay and does not have a valid reason (force majeure), the student is obliged to repay the grant in its entirety. If you become ill or have to terminate your stay for other reasons, you can apply for exemption from paying all or part of the grant. A medical certificate must be attached to such an application. Please contact the Erasmus+ Coordinator in the Exchange Guide for assistance.
