With a Master's degree in Industrial Asset Management students will acquire expertise that is much in demand in various industrial sectors today. It has a modern twist to engineering education.

Graduated students will obtain competitive competence on a Master's degree level in technology, and will develop knowledge related to engineering, operations, and management of advanced and complex industrial facilities/engineering systems in private and public organizations. They will be able to apply the knowledge obtained in challenging industrial environments in all life cycle phases of complex engineering systems, (i.e. design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance, modification and removal).

In general, graduate students will be qualified to participate in a range of engineering and operational roles both in private and public sectors. As the study program consists of general principles and methods, as well as practical cases they will be able to resolve challenges on advanced engineering and operational levels even outside the area of specialization in cooperation with experts from various other fields. Hence, the graduates will be qualified for many attractive job positions in, for instance oil & gas, manufacturing/production, energy, process, public infrastructure, etc.

This MSc programme has a strong international profile with students from all over the world.

Career prospects

The programme qualifies the graduates for a broad range of positions in private industry and public organizations. Since the core of the master programme consists of commonly usable principles and methods, graduate students can qualify for many attractive job positions in offshore as well as onshore industry.  

In general, the graduates will be well qualified for positions within various sectors inclusive of facility/plant owners or operators, service and technology providers, engineering contractors, consultants, authorities, as well as public institutions who are involved in designing, building, operating, removing, and/or recycling of advanced and complex engineering facilities and systems. This can include for instance, oil and gas platforms, subsea production facilities, drilling rigs, pipelines, refineries, infrastructure, energy production and distribution, manufacturing, and a wide variety of other engineering and process industry.  

Many will also have interesting job opportunities within research, education, or in public sector devoted to control, regulation and law enforcement of industrial sectors.  

Moreover, a completed master's degree with a minimum average grade B for Subjects and grade A or B for Master thesis may qualify for admission to an engineering/technical PhD programme at the University of Stavanger.

Learning outcome 

A graduate student, who has completed 2-year master’s degree in industrial Asset Management, shall have the following learning outcome defined as knowledge, skills and general competence:  

 

Knowledge 

K1: The candidate has advanced and interdisciplinary knowledge in industrial assets and specialized insights into technical and operational integrity, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship.  

K2: The candidate has thorough and relevant knowledge in engineering and management of advanced, complex and integrated industrial assets (ex. production systems / processes, production facilities, technical systems / machinery / equipment, etc.) in all life cycle phases (i.e. concept development and Design, construction and assembly, installation and commissioning, operation and maintenance, modification and upgrading, removal and recycling).  

K3: The candidate has knowledge of engineering and management of industrial assets and management that can be used for technical and operational integrity analysis, technology development and innovation, and entrepreneurship in new areas of practical and / or theoretical importance.  

K3: The candidate has the ability to analyze practical or academic problems in industrial assets based on history, traditions, and industrial and social needs.  

 

Skills 

S1: The candidate can analyze existing theories, methods and interpretations in industrial assets (ex. Production systems / processes, production facilities, technical systems / machines / equipment, etc.) and work independently with practical and theoretical problem solving. The candidate can independently identify, map, analyze and solve challenging production processes / production problems using existing theories, methods and interpretations in the field.  

S2: The candidate can use relevant methods and knowledge for research and professional development in an independent manner.  

S3: The candidate can analyze and relate critically to various sources of information and use them to structure and formulate practical and / or academic arguments related to engineering and management of industrial assets.  

S4: The candidate may conduct an independent, limited research or development project under supervision and in accordance with current research ethical standards related to engineering activities, as well as technical and operational integrity analysis, technology development and innovation and entrepreneurship.  

 

General Competence 

G1: The candidate can analyze relevant academic and research ethical challenges and be eligible to participate in the development and implementation of new technologies, methods and principles, as well as engineering or management solutions for industrial assets in the industry.  

G2: The candidate can apply knowledge and skills in new areas to carry out advanced tasks and projects related to industrial assets, technical and operational integrity, technology development and innovation, and entrepreneurship.  

G3: The candidate can communicate comprehensive work professionally and independently, and master terminology, language and expression in industrial assets.  

G4: The candidate can communicate professional issues, as well as analyzes and conclusions in the field, both with specialists and the general public.  

G5: The candidate can contribute to new thinking and innovation processes in technology and management of advanced, complex and integrated industrial assets in all life cycle phases.  

Academic requirements

A bachelor´s degree in any engineering discipline is required.

It may be an advantage if the applicant:

- Has taken subjects related to engineering, technical and operational aspects of engineering facilities/systems and processes in the bachelor's degree. 

- Has relevant technical and operational industrial experience related to engineering systems and processes. 

All applicants must have at least 30 ECTS credits in mathematics/statistics/calculus.

Admission to this master's programme requires a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C (according to ECTS Standards) in your bachelor's degree.

Why should I choose UiS?

This study, industrial technology and operations management, is quite unique. There are not many engineering disciplines that focus on technology, operational and management aspects of complex technical systems.

What are the job prospects after completing a master's degree?

If you look at the labor market now, the industrial norm becomes more complicated and more technologically advanced. Students must acquire skill sets and qualifications beyond the traditional engineering subject. This study program is designed to provide the qualifications required of future engineers. Everyone who takes this course is competitive in the job market.

Exchange scheme

Students can go on a study abroad experience during the 3rd semester of the master's program in industrial asset management.



This semester consists of 30 ECTS credits of electives.  During the exchange semester you can choose subjects similar the master program specialization. The courses you want to take abroad must be approved by the department.  It is important that the subjects/ courses from abroad not overlap with subjects you have already taken. An advice is to think about your specialization and your field of interest.

Our department

Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science

The Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science is a leading academic environment for education and research within offshore technology as well as land-based industry.

The department is focusing on mechanical and civil disciplines, including the petroleum and renewable energy sectors.

The students will be qualified to take over challenging careers in industry in a broad capacity, inclusive of design and robust engineering of complex systems, developing and implementing new technology, methods and principles for optimization of engineering systems, etc. 



The department has about 50 faculty and staff members. The current enrolment is about 20 PhD degree students, 90 master degree students and 250 bachelor degree students.

The main areas of the department’s expertise are:

To support leading educational and research activities, the Department has developed its lab facilities and other resources, including:

The department has a very close cooperation with the industry to support its educational and research activities. The Centre for Industrial asset management (CIAM), based in the department, is an important key to establishing such cooperation.



One of the most up-and-coming is the Risavika Gas Centre, a research and development centre for environmental and gas technology, located in the Stavanger region.

In addition to the local expertise and competencies available, the Department actively collaborate with some of the leading educational and research organizations around the world.
